- Mary Lucille Boudreau
October 18, 1934 - January 19, 2026
With heavy hearts, the family of Mary Lucille Boudreau would like to announce her peaceful passing on January 19, 2026. Born in Samson's Cove, Cape Breton on October 18, 1934, to the late Nicholas and Bertha Mae Martell. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Alfred (Buddy) in 2017. She is survived by her children Carolyn (Michael) MacNeil, Soldiers Cove, Bruce (Judy) Boudreau, St. Peter's, Rose (Mark) Merrick, River Bourgeois, Sheldon (Martha) Boudreau, Enfield, Doreen Boudreau, River Bourgeois, Patricia (Rod) MacLeod, Milford, and Chris (Tanya) Boudreau, Hammonds Plains. The center of Nanny's life for the last several decades has been her grandchildren. Nanny is survived by grandchildren Stephanie (Robbie) and Jason (Kayleigh) MacNeil; Ryan (Julie), Evan, Logan and Leanne Boudreau; Robyn and Meghan (Logan) Merrick; Nathan (Christina), Stuart and Myles (Brooke) Boudreau; Keegan (Lindsay), Emily (Ryan) and Lachlan MacLeod; and Ella (Marshall), Addison (Gavin) and Reid Boudreau. Great grandchildren Owen, Alex and Luke Boucher, Cate, Wyatt, Remy and Claire Boudreau. Lucille is survived by her sisters Jeanette (Ernie) Bird, Beatrice Martell, Viola (Arthur) Samson and brother Gerard (Rosemary) Martell. Sister-in-laws Betty Martell, Monica Martell and sister-in-law Emilienne Boudreau. She was preceded by brothers Amadee Martell, Howard Martell, and Ambrose Martell, her parents-in-law Sam and Gertie Boudreau, brothers-in-law Austin Boudreau and William Bird, sisters-in-law Obeline Burke, Linda Martell, as well as four siblings in infancy. Lucille completed her schooling in Halifax where education for people with visual impairment was available. This involved her leaving home at a very young age and travelling to Halifax to attend school. Most years, she made this trip alone and did not get to see her family again until the following summer. She attended the Halifax School for the Blind until subsequently graduating from St. Patrick's Girls High School in Halifax. Upon graduation, she returned to Cape Breton where she was recruited to teach in a one-room school in Seaview and Oban. Her pay for those years of teaching was $750 per year. While her pay wasn't much to write home about, her teaching assignment was where she met Buddy, a handsome local boy who quickly became her life partner. They were married in 1956, and together, they navigated challenging times where money and food were scarce. They started a family together in 1959 that eventually grew to include 7 children, 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Throughout it all, she was the center of our home. She was the caregiver who looked after everything her children or grandchildren needed. She worried about everyone constantly and was known to intimidate even the biggest members of our household. She was a devout Catholic and held her faith deeply right until her passing, saying a rosary with her family by her side in one of her last moments of clarity. Mom was a respected member of her community and volunteered with the CWL, the St. John The Baptist Parish Choir, as well as volunteering at various activities related to her children. She will be deeply missed by all of us, but we know that she is reunited with her husband, and in the loving arms of our Lord Father in heaven
