- Thomas Graham Carter, born in Aurora, Ill., on July 27, 1948, died at home in La Vernia, Texas, on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007.
Tom was raised in a military family who moved many times before he graduated from Killeen High School in 1966. Their homes after Aurora included North Carolina, Japan, Oklahoma, Germany, Missouri, and Texas. It may have been these early experiences that instilled in Tom a great love of travel and meeting new people from around the world.
Tom graduated from Texas Tech in 1970 and began his work at AT&T. He received an MBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio and completed graduate level classes at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Tom served as an adjunct professor at Washington University's School of Applied Engineering and Technology for five years.
During his 35 years in the telecommunications industry, he most enjoyed consulting with international companies in South Africa, Asia, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Tom retired from AT&T July 15, 2006.
He was an active member of the Downtown San Antonio Rotary Club. For many years, he coordinated the international exchange of delegations of business people. He applied the Rotary motto to all aspects of his life: "Is it fair? Is it the truth? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all?" Tom was also on the board of directors of the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind.
His favorite recreational pastime was fishing at the coast for redfish or for bass at his family ranch in Karnes County. He truly enjoyed life and spending time with his family and friends. He was always "charging right along!"
He was preceded in death by his father, Cloud Carter.
